How do you do user research?

Research is a design material for me, not a gate I have to clear. I run moderated sessions to hear people use their own words, unmoderated language tests to check whether a phrase carries, and I build tooling when the dataset is too big to read by hand. The point is always to replace my opinion with theirs.
